On September 23, the Institute for Advanced International Studies (IAIS) at the University of World Economy and Diplomacy hosted a meeting between Odil Gafarov, Deputy Director of IAIS, Abbos Bobokhonov, Head of the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies, and Research Fellow Madina Alimova with Julia Lovell, Professor of Modern Chinese History at the University of London.
The discussion focused on contemporary approaches to the study of China and its historical role, as well as the development of archaeological and historical research in Central Asia. Professor Lovell expressed particular interest in how archaeological studies related to the Yuezhi and the Kushan Empire are perceived in Uzbekistan and how these interpretations are reflected in academic scholarship.
The Belt and Road Initiative was also discussed as an important framework for fostering deeper connectivity and creating new opportunities for cooperation in the region.
Participants highlighted the importance of academic and cultural engagement as a means of strengthening mutual understanding. It was noted that, alongside economic projects, educational and humanitarian initiatives play a significant role.
At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides expressed readiness to broaden academic dialogue and discussed prospects for institutional cooperation between IAIS and the University of London, including joint research, publications, and student exchange programs, particularly for PhD scholars.
