IAIS and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation Discussed Opportunities for Cooperation in International Studies and Regional Security

On July 21, 2025, the University of World Economy and Diplomacy (UWED) hosted a meeting of the leadership of the Institute for Advanced International Studies with representatives of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, FES). The delegation included Kristin Linke, Head of the Eastern Europe Department of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation in Berlin, and Boburshokh Alimov, Project Manager of the FES Office in Uzbekistan. From IAIS, the meeting was attended by Akram Umarov, Director, Odil Gafarov, Deputy Director, and Shakhboz Akhmedov, Head of the Centre for Sustainable Development.

 

During the discussion, the parties addressed a range of current topics, including regional cooperation between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, relations between Uzbekistan and the European Union, regional security strategies, and principles of academic internationalization. Special attention was paid to the prospects for joint initiatives in the areas of sustainable development, international research, and humanitarian collaboration.

 

Representatives of IAIS provided detailed information about the institute’s activities and structure. Particular focus was given to analytical and research activities on regional policy, security, and international relations.

 

The discussions also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in the field of academic publications and joint research projects. The Friedrich Ebert Foundation expressed interest in supporting selected initiatives in Central Asia, including funding for non-governmental organizations, technical and humanitarian projects, and the development of joint programs with the Institute for Advanced International Studies. Potential areas for co-authored publications and analytical materials were also considered, particularly those related to Uzbekistan-Afghanistan relations and regional security mechanisms.

 

At the conclusion of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their mutual interest in developing a sustainable partnership and agreed to further elaborate concrete areas of cooperation soon.
