Frontier Talks. Water Governance and Climate Disasters in a Changing World

The session will provide a timely platform for examining the growing intersection between water governance and climate-related disasters across different world regions. Against the backdrop of global climate change, many countries are experiencing increasing water-related challenges, including recurring floods, droughts, disruptions to safe drinking water supply, pressure on agricultural sustainability, and severe damage to housing and infrastructure. These developments are having profound effects on local livelihoods, economic stability, and the resilience of both rural and urban communities.

The session will feature Dr. Ismaël Edouard Maazaz, Researcher at Tampere University (Finland). Drawing on multidisciplinary perspectives from development studies, political ecology, and geography, he will offer insights into the politics of water and climate disasters in a rapidly changing world.

The discussion will focus on how hydraulic policies and practices are evolving across continents in response to intensifying environmental pressures, while also examining institutional and community-based mechanisms aimed at strengthening climate resilience and addressing floods and drinking water shortages in a comprehensive manner. The seminar will also offer a comparative perspective by considering experiences from Africa, Central Asia, and South-East Asia, encouraging broader reflection on how different regions respond to shared water and climate vulnerabilities.
