On 24 March, the Institute for Advanced International Studies hosted another session of its Frontier Talksseries on the theme “The State of Global Terrorism”. The event featured Professor Rohan Gunaratna from the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and provided a timely platform for examining the contemporary evolution of terrorist threats, the transformation of extremist networks, and the widening security implications of ongoing conflicts across different regions.
The discussion was held against the backdrop of an increasingly complex international security environment shaped by protracted armed conflicts, ideological radicalisation, online mobilisation, and the growing interconnection between terrorism, geopolitical competition, and information insecurity. In this context, the seminar offered an opportunity to reflect on the changing nature of global terrorism and the broader challenges it poses to states, societies, and international institutions.
Bringing together academic and policy perspectives, the session addressed one of the most urgent issues on today’s international agenda. Particular attention was devoted to the ways in which extremist actors adapt to new political and technological realities, as well as to the implications of these shifts for regional and global security frameworks. The event also underscored the importance of sustained expert dialogue and informed analysis in responding to emerging threats.
